This adult Weddell seal is equipped with a "seal cam" and other instruments to gather data. This female weighs about 450 kg. The 3-year project is funded by NSF and has produced many insights on the behavior of Weddell seals under the ice.

To assess the local populations of seals, the use of helicopters was necessary. Texas A&M researcher Dr. Randy Davis holds the door as graduate student Rebecca Watson climbs into the helicopter.
