Using SMARTS

This section will show you how to configure SMARTS to automatically search for funding and email you the results in funding alert notices. You must have an InfoEd login ID to be able to use SMARTS, see Acquiring a Login ID for more details if you do not already have one.

  1. Login to InfoEd at http://rf-infoed1.tamu.edu
  2. Once logged in, click on Find Funding on the left navigation bar.
  3. There are two options, SPIN and SMARTS. Select SMARTS. The Preferences screen will then open. Here you configure how many results you receive per email message, among other options. If you do not want to receive email notifications, but still want to search for funding, please see Using SPIN.
  4. Once the Preferences are configured to your liking, click on the  Icon above the left navigational bar to save changes.
It is a good idea to click the  icon after making any changes to the Preferences, Keywords, Applicant Types, and the other search menus so that you do not lose any of the changes that you have made to the SMARTS search engine in case of a crash or computer failure.

  1. Click on Keywords. Here you can define how broad or narrow your search criteria are. The box in the middle has a list of very narrow search terms organized alphabetically, like Academic Achievement, whereas the list on the right side consists of very broad categories, like Education. Click a letter from the list above the box to see all terms that begin with that letter.
  2. Add terms to your search by clicking on them and then clicking the Select button near the middle of the screen. Once successfully added, the terms will appear on the bottom of the web page under the heading Selected Keywords. Removing terms from your keywords is equally easy; click the box next to an unwanted term and then click the Remove button. Don’t forget to save your changes.

With Preferences and Keywords configured and saved, SMARTS can begin searching for funding automatically; results will be emailed to you daily from Tuesday through Saturday. If you are receiving too many notifications, you can further narrow your search using additional search criteria.
